Waipu Highland Games

The Waipu Highland Games is one of the most iconic events in New Zealand, held every New Year’s Day in the heart of Waipu village. Dating back to 1871, it is one of the longest continuously running Highland Games in the world.

Thousands of visitors gather on the Waipu showgrounds to celebrate Waipu’s proud Scottish heritage with a full day of traditional Highland competition and entertainment.

What to Expect

  • Pipe bands from across New Zealand competing throughout the day
  • Heavy athletics — caber tossing, hammer throw, shot put
  • Scottish country dancing competitions
  • Tug of war and other traditional events
  • Food stalls, market vendors and a fantastic community atmosphere
